Tired of Winter?

Spend a day with pets and dog treats and dog beds and dock diving dogs and agility dogs!
Black Lab Fabrication

Cabin-crazy? Tired of winter, tired of rain (snow), tired of politics? Think you are imploding? Need a weekend of county fair fun watching dogs dive off docks inside? (Here is how to start dog dock diving.)

Sunday is the final day of the World of Pets. We spent all day there today. Let me tell you about it.

I suggest you get there shortly after it opens or you may have a long walk, even though parking is free.

Grab a program at the door and familiarize yourself with the layout. As you enter you will see bleaches and the huge indoor swimming pool for dock diving dogs. This area is also where you will see the comic dog show.

To the right are the exhibitors – dog stuff, cat stuff, rabbits, snakes, etc., plus everything to buy and a lot to eat.

To the left are the two agility rings (huge). Agility is a dog sport like an obstacle course and you can cheer on your favorite pupster from the bleachers all day long.

To Eat

I had an early lunch to avoid the crowds (it’s also a good idea to hit the restrooms) – a Dr. Pepper and a Cesar wrap with Old Bay chips. My little girl had a hot dog and looked like a lovely blue butterfly – they have make-up artists to make the little ones lovely.

Later we had lemonades and I took home two salads in a jar!

We almost bought yard-long licorice. Oh, and at the strudel place we had cinnamon sugar long ‘things.’

To Cheer (and yell!)

We walked to the bleachers at the agility trials and saw two rings at once from the bleachers! Little dogs and big dogs and the MC is very helpful. Although agility is an AKC dog sport, even All-American breed mixes can take part and the dogs love to run fast and go through tunnels and over overhead walks and over hurdles and more.

Dog Stuff
Waly Wag Bag

We watched dogs being fitted for front-attach harnesses in neon pink at "Walk Your Dog with Love."
We saw oodles of T-shirts and a new dog utility bag to hold treats and keys and cell phones and poop bags on walks – by Waly Wag. We saw two artists at work – Pet Palettes and Diane Bauer – even a photographer. Black Lab Fabrication (on Facebook) was my new favorite and, returning again was another favorite – Dog is Good, with some items on sale! Himalayan Dog Chews have really grown fast!

We met a portable grooming company – they come to you! There were veterinarians and plenty of dog beds to try and buy – and bones and treats and antlers. I bought two moose scarves at Acadia Antlers! They are always coming out with new items.

Rescues

Goldheart Golden Retriever Rescue, and a Westie Rescue, and BARCS - a local animal shelter in Baltimore, - and greyhounds and a cat rescue and Pinups for Pitbulls! “Take my leash, not my life.”

You could easily spend all day or more, and remember Sunday is the last day this year in Maryland – or you can drive down to Virginia next month. Say, I just might do that! See you there!

A World of Pets This Weekend

The Wonderful World of Smell and Taste at the World of Pets

Winterlude of Fun this Weekend

Think of the World of Pets this weekend at the Maryland State Fairgrounds as a winter interlude (a winterlude?) for those of you are snowbound or rainbound or cold-weather-bound and want to get out and “think summer” – like carnival food or county fair fun.

You may even find tropical nonalcoholic drinks in colorful glasses that look like blue dolphins or pink flamingos. Peanuts (The Nut Lady and Pretzels) and more flavors of fudge than you can imagine – to take home. Real lemonade made on the spot. Carmel apples (The Apple Cart) and new favorites from All Things Sweet & Treats.

Love strudel?  Stop at the The Original Strudel Factory.

And don’t forget your best friend – take home some treats from Annie’s Pooch Pops or the Baltimore Dog Bakery.

For the Human in You

Check out the Linganore Wineceller/Red Shedman Farm Brewery booth and the Sangria booth!

Who doesn’t like licorice? I am going to stop by the Sweet and Sour Licorice store.

Nothing Smells Better than a Clean Dog

Sudzy Pet will be at the World of Pets – do you need a groomer to come to you?

Nothing smells better than a clean dog except maybe real leather. Just look around for new leather designs. And inhale deeply.

There will be hundreds of exhibitors (see the list here)  at the World of Pets – and I will be there all three days, in order to experience it all. See you there!

It's Almost Dog Time!

Yup, it’s that time of year again and I can hardly wait for the weekend. It’s time for the Wide Wonderful World of Pets: this year is the 16th annual largest pet show on the East Coast at the Maryland State Fairgrounds Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Come See the World of Pets

Animals galore. Hundreds of exhibitors (see the list here) – from dog rescues to scarves to fudge to dock diving dogs to a comedy dog show (Johnny Peers and the Muttville Comix) that will leave you in stitches – clapping and laughing –

Enter the Pet Show for the cutest pet, best sports fan, best in show, talent, or most original. Click here for more details.

Sit in on a seminar about goats or miniature horses on Saturday afternoon.

Joint the parade of breeds with your favorite dog on Sunday afternoon.

Visit the World of Cats with a cat show and cat contests, the World of Reptiles (and Extreme Reptiles), the World of Birds, a gerbil show, a guinea–pig-a-thon, adoption events, a petting zoo,

Watch dogs tackling an obstacle course and, yes, it is a dog sport – agility. All weekend long, all three days, just to the left of the main entrance will be the sport of dog agility – all breeds of dogs running through tunnels, over high jumps, between poles and more. Two rings of dogs competing with seating for you on bleachers.

Watch dogs jump off a dock into the water in competition. Three separate contests: the long jump, the high jump and the sprint. Dogs love it and they also love the audience participating to cheer them on.

Dear Mr. Trump, About those Boxcar Children, . . .

Dear Mr. Trump,

Here is another Boxcar Children book with a really good plot that kept even me guessing! This is the last letter in this series but DogEvals hopes to keep up the correspondence with you and we look forward to reading how you like these books and which other books you recommend.

The Boxcar Children: The Dog-Gone Mystery (#119), by Gertrude Chandler Warner (Scholastic Books, 2009, 120 pages, grades 2-4, $4.99) An animated movie (to be followed by more, and 145 titles in the series! That will keep you busy.)

The boxcar children have a dog, Watch, so they decide to take him to school - dog training classes but everyone else in this book is a real character (Mr. Trump, you may even find someone like you in this book!) and a plausible suspect of kidnapping the dogs in class - the dog groomer, the trainer, the student and his dog in class who don’t seem to need any training, the lady with two little dogs that she can’t control, the baker, and . . . . but not the butcher or the candlestick maker.

Mr. Trump, maybe you can have a little chat with the author and ask her to get UTD (up to date) on her dog training methods. We no longer use ‘commands’ and we don’t push a dog down (even gently) when we want him to lay down. Instead, we have a better, more modern relationship with our dogs today and we use treats (only in the first phase of training) and clickers! It’s more fun and less stressful!

Back to the boxcar children – have you ever seen a dog with blue eyes?

And about the plot – DogEvals will leave that to you to discover. Let us know how you and your youngest son and all your eight grands like this one!

These books that DogEvals has reviewed and suggested for your reading pleasure are like The Bobbsey Twins and Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys.

Remember, Good Books Survive the Times. . . .

Hope you are now an avid reader!
Til next time,
The DogEvals gang

Caveat: You can probably find this book at your local public library. Or try a used-books store.
