Book Review: Raised in a Barn, Number 2 in the Good Dog series (farm dog, new filly, children's book)

Raised in a Barn, 2nd in the Good Dog series, by Cam Higgins (Simon and Schuster, 122 pp, 2020, $5.99, ages 5-9)

Horsing Around

Bo is a feisty little canine know-it-all with a heart of gold who looks like Everydog and lives with his kids, Wyatt and Imani, on the Davis Family farm. Baby Dog Bo befriends Baby Horse Comet and challenges her to a race, only to be taught a thing or two about being a good sport and friend by the other farm animals.

An early lesson that Bo does manage to teach Comet is that nobody in a barn sleeps in!

Humans play a part in this 'good barn story,' but animals are the main characters, and each one has a name - from Zonks the pig, to Blue the bird, King and Diva the cats, Nanny Sheep, and Grey and Star, Comet's parents.

Barn Hair, Don't Care

The main event, however, is the Foal Walk in the horse show. Days and days of training and grooming precede the big event that Grey and Star took part in when they were younger. They are excited their baby will be competing in the event that they met and fell in love at in years past.

The suspense grows: how will Comet do? Will she learn everything she needs to know in time? Will Bo be able to attend for good luck? Or will the two friends think it's more fun to chase squirrels?

---------------------------

Next in the Good Dog series is Herd You Loud and Clear, starring Bo, of course, but also Puffs, the sheep. Does Bo learn to herd sheep or get into more scraps with his canine buddy, Scrapper?

And after that comes the 4th book and the 5th - up to 10 so far.

Delightfully drawn animal scenes on every page keep the youngsters turning the pages to read more.
