Book Review: Tuesday Takes Me There (service dog, golden retriever, NYC and the Capital, children's book)

Tuesday Takes Me There: The Healing Journey of a Veteran and His Service Dog, by Luis Montalvan (Macmillan, 40 pages, 2016, $15.29, grades K – Grade 4)

A Delightfully Fun and Unique Book for Kids (and their Adults) with Words Just for Kids, Written by a Dog – Tuesday, Of Course!

By far, the best of the three Tuesday books*, Tuesday Takes me There has a nice kid-friendly plot, super big photos, and a surprise ending. The author, a dog, also sneaks in a couple of sentences of history where applicable but not enough to ward off kids who “just wanna have fun.”

Tuesday and Luis live in New York City but have a very important appointment in Washington, DC. Can you guess where?

How They Went

Told in Tuesday’s own words, Tuesday takes Luis by ferry and by subway and by horse (Bruno) carriage and by bus (and a double-decker bus) and by helicopter and by train and by pedicab and by merry-go-round and by foot (6 or 7, depending on how you count) and by red convertible and by. . . oh, my, even more!

Where They Went

Along the way, they see and learn about statues and monuments in NYC and Washington: Freedom Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the US Capitol, the Washington Monument and the reflecting pool, the Jefferson Memorial, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum - and they even spend some time reflecting on friends in the Arlington National Cemetery

Fun and A Mission

Tuesday splashes through a field of flowers into a stream, but, wait! Have they forgotten about their mission?

Not a chance!

Can you guess where they are going? You may just have to read the book to find out!
